10 Simple ways to welcome in Spring
After a harsh and particularly snowy winter, we are all looking forward to an early spring, especially when Punxsutawney Phil (or Staten Island checuk for my fellow New Yorkers) predicted its early arrival. I have collected ten simple and easy tips that will help you welcome Spring in your home.
Tip #1 - Do a thorough spring cleaning
After having the windows closed tight during the months of Winter, our houses trap dust and other pollutants. As a result, everything looks and feels dull. Using dusting clothes such as Swiffer is a quick and effective way to pick up the dust. Vacuum with hose attachment works on upholstered furniture well. This will bring out the shine and brighten the colors of your furniture and accessories once again. Places such as base or floor moldings are another place to dust, especially if they are white. When they are clean, they will give you the crisp feeling which is perfect for Spring. Clean the windows from both inside and out. They will let in the beautiful sunshine and highlight everything in the room. Airing out your rooms with open windows is not only good for your health, it will also let in the sweet smell of Spring air.
Tip #2 - Switch out the drapery
While we are on the subject of windows, it is a good idea to take down your heavy overdrapery for dry cleaning. This is especially important for velvet. Replace them with simple toppers or panels made of linen or lighter material. When combined with crisp, white sheer drapery underneath, they create a light and airy look.
Tip #3 - Replace your tired and dirty door mat
If it is beyond cleaning, it is time to replace it. Believe it or not, a door mat sets the mood subconsciously for everyone that comes through the door. Nothing says "Spring" better than a clean and colorful door mat. It will make everone feel happy and welcomed. And don't forget the mats by your mud room and in your kitchen too!

Tip #4 - Give your plants some TLC
Check if your plants need to be trimmed, repotted, or cleaned. This is especially true for house plants with large, green leafs. Dust will settle on them too. A gentle wipe with damp rag will bring the luster back on their leaves, and making them look more healthy. If you don't have any plants, a bouquet of flowers will do wonders for your spirit and add a touch of Spring to your home.
Tip #5 - Switch out your accessories
If you own accessories with bright colors, it is time to bring them out. My favorite color combination for spring accessories is cream or white mixed with cheerful yellow and green. They signify the re-birth and renewal of Mother Earth's cycles to me. They also create the crisp look that is so well suited for the season.

Tip #6 - Update with throw pillows
Pillows with texture is a great way to create a fresh look for Spring. Pillows with bright color accent on neutral colored fabric is another wonderful idea for Spring accessory. They can be heaped on the bed or sofa to create an inviting yet fresh feel.

Tip #7 - Freshen up your bath and bedrooms
Look for ways to whiten your linens and towels if they appear yellow. I love to set out white fluffy towels and bath mats to give my bathroom a fresh look. Another way to create an impact is with your shower curtain: white shower curtains with whimsical motifs can lighten the look significantly.
Tip #8 - Layer a smaller rug
Layering a smaller rug on top of your wall-to-wall can be an inexpensive way to add a pop of spring colors without spending lots of money. Just make sure to use a rug pad specifically made for this purpose.

Tip #9 - Freshen up your kitchen accessories
Use baskets or containers made with natural materials such as wicker to hold fresh fruits add a punch of color and connect you to Mother Earth. Lemons, lime, and green apples are all in keeping with my favorite Spring color scheme.

Tip #10 - Update your sofa with a slipcover
A slipcover can be made for a fraction of what you would pay for a new sofa. Why not have one made for the warm weather months that you can clean after the season is over? If you already own a sofa made for slipcover, then you are in luck. You can go back to the store and ask them to have one ordered. Most stores will be happy to assist you with the order even if they no longer sell the sofa itself.
My most important tip of all is to simply enjoy the sunshine and the fresh air. And don't forget to stop and smell the flowers!
